The question I went into 2020 asking about the people living in America, the country which I expatriated from in 2004, still remains the key question: Can Americans remember to care for each other? Can they love each other in spite of their differences?
I feel the jury is still out because the situation is not nearly as dire as I expect it will become over the next few years.
Thing is, looking at it through our lens here in 2020, and it feels foolish to bet on “yes,” but in disasters, the better angels of our natures often come out.
So while I agree that the “vaccine as Savior” plot line ain’t happening (and the reveal of a vaccine will likely only further divide people as your article implies), I can’t give up hope in the American people … yet. Time will tell. For now, I think the world would be better off if we all did our best to offer some encouragment to our Yankee brothers and sisters.
