In this linked video, I learned that in China you can't own your own land, you lease your property from the government for 70 years. The government can come along and take your home and they might give you a small stipend but you are at their mercy.

Will the US go in that direction? Well, I'd ask those that say no, what's the difference between soul-less government and soul-less corporate entity owning your place of residence? Seems to me to be in name only.
It comes down to having a sense of control over one's basic needs--food and shelter are near the top of that list. So no, I don't buy the whole "You will own nothing and you will be happy" nonsense. And yes,, I agree with you that this is not a good trend and you've a right to be concerned.
