I really love the dichotomy created between the Bono (yes) and the Dylan (no) and how we can look at the various mega artists in rock music through that lens. As a person who is into perceiving the world archetypally, I’d suggest there are also the Trickster Shapeshifters who play both roles, depending on what mood they are in. I think perhaps another favorite, Billy Corgan, may be more in that camp, though if you put a gun to my head and said there’s only Yes/No, he’s more of a No. John Lennon is another tricky one.
And thanks for sharing the video of The Sphere and “Even Better Than The Real Thing,” which for my money is one of The Edge’s best guitar lines throughout the song. Like most Gen Xers who has loved U2, I’ve had my periods where I’ve been annoyed by their, ie Bono’s, over-the -top approach, but they are a match made in whatever corner of heaven that The Sphere occupies.
Last, I found Steve Hayden due to his entry into the world of Phish and this article makes me curious not only to see what Phish will do with The Sphere but if Hayden may write about it. Phish is another band that feels like both yes/no and while they’ve always had a killer light show with Chris Kuroda at the helm, they’ve also focused most of their show on just playing good music. That said, they’ve done some epic theatrics on New Years and Halloween shows so I’m sure they are planning to make The Sphere special.
